Young members section (YMS) of IESL conducted a CSR project of restoration of damaged electrical installation (due to recent floods) & modifying the electrical wiring at Welgama Kanishta Vidyalaya, Mahagama, Bulathsinghala.
A team of Engineers with Chairman of YMS Eng. Dayan Herath visited Bulathsinghala flooded area on 8th June 2017 and selected the school in which the property and infrastructure was highly damaged due to flood. Welgama Kanishta Vidyalaya is a rural and remote school which is having 153 students and 15 teachers. The school consists 5 buildings in which they conduct classes from grade 01 up to Grade 11. Students of Welgama Kanshta Vidyalaya were awarded for their achievements in education as well as in sports and aesthetic subjects.
On 8th June 2017, Chairman of YMS and the team had a discussion with the principal and vise principal on their requirement of the restoration of Electrical system. Principal of Welgama Kanishta Vidyalay stated that the school needs immediate restoration of the damaged electrical system. They also requested some new Electrical installations required in the laboratory, stage and the main hall. Further, the principal stated that the renovation of civil infrastructure has already been undertaken by some villagers and donors. Thus, on the same day, the team identified, designed and planned the required electrical items for the existing & new systems on site.
Then the proposal was initially presented to the President-IESL Eng.Jayavilal Meegoda, then to the council of IESL. The new design was further modified by the President-IESL. He stated that he extends his fullest support to the project. Chairman of YMS in consultation with the YMS committee formed a project team under the leadership of Eng.Dinesh Dissanayake. Hon. Minister of education and the secretary of the ministry of education were informed on the project.
The team was able to collect the total amount in the BOQ from the enthusiastic young members within a short period.
Early morning of 17th July 2017 the team with leadership of YMS chairman left Colombo to Bulathsinhala. The team worked determinedly on full day. Around 10.00PM the team was able to complete both the restoration & new installation and illuminated the school premises. From this project around 153 student and 15 teachers in the school were benefited. Upon completion the principal thanked the IESL for lighting up the future of the students which was darkened by the flood. Chairman of YMS also took a moment to extend his gratitude to the President-IESL Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, Council of the IESL, members of YMS for their donations and the team that attended to the project. Further, he stated that YMS hopes to extend such social activities over the year.
