IESL delegates meet with HC Pakistan on the unfortunate death of Engineer Priyantha Kumara

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka is saddened by the unfortunate death of Eng. Priyantha Kumara who was working in Pakisthan.

A delegation of IESL comprising President Elect Eng. (Dr) Kamal Laksiri, Immediate Past President Eng. K P I U Dharmapala, Council Member Eng. Shaheed Musthalie and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Neil Abeysekera paid a visit to the High Commission of  Pakistan in Colombo. During this visit, IESL delegation  handed over a letter urging Pakistani authorities to,

  • Expedite the process of bringing the accused to justice 

  • Provide a substantial compensation to the deceased family  

  • To ensure the security of other Sri Lankans employed in Pakistan

Number of delegates allowed to visit the High Commission was restricted due to security reasons. The discussion went on very cordially and Officials of the High Commission, while condemning the incident, described in detail the actions already initiated by the Pakistani Government. The officials of the High Commission expected to attend the funeral proceedings of Eng. Priyantha but had to abandon it based on the advice of Sri Lankan authorities. The officials appreciated the visit of the IESL delegation and recalled the long lasting relationship between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The High Commission briefed the IESL delegation   about the situation in Pakistan and actions that have been already taken.   

  1. The accused will be prosecuted in the Anti-terrorism Court and death penalty will be imposed for those who were directly responsible for the murder.

  1. No lawyer in Pakistan will appear for the accused in the court trials.

  1. All the religious leaders in Pakistan have condemned this  incident 

  1. The company where Eng. Priyantha was employed will continuously pay his monthly remuneration to his wife until her demise.

  1. A Leading business delegation who have collected donations will be coming to Sri Lanka during the coming month to handover the collected funds to Eng. Priyantha’s family in person.
