An invitation to an Engineer

An Invitation and a wakeup call to all Engineers in Sri Lanka from Eng.Sarvaraja

In 2013, I watched in the television the ceremonial opening of a bridge by a Minister.

This bridge was the ugliest bridge in the world (A Steel ‘Maybee’ Bridge of British origin). But it was built at the most beautiful spot in the world.

Sadly it all happened Sri Lanka!

Where are our Engineers? What are our Engineers doing? Who is making such decisions in our country? What are the consequences of building this kind of infrastructure?

Because it is a bridge, people will think it was done by Engineers! These days, procurements are not done by Engineers but by bureaucrats, ministers and politicians. The challenges to the engineering profession are immense.

Eng.Sarvaraja has summarized the perilous situation engineering profession is facing today in Sri Lanka through his poem, the most beautiful and the most provocative poem on engineering I have ever come across. Interestingly it is self-critical of his own profession and that makes it even more valuable.

The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, must organize seminars every year, in every district and in every University in Sri Lanka, on the sorry state of the engineering profession using this whistle blowing poem. No society today can survive without engineers.

I can certainly do an English translation of this Tamil poem and a Sinhala colleague can then do the Sinhala translation.
