President's Corner - ‘ ENGINEER’ , the peer reviewed quarterly journal of the IESL

President S B W

Dear Members,

In this corner I would like to focus on the ‘ ENGINEER’ , the peer reviewed quarterly journal of the IESL.

Published since 1973 it has pride of place as the foremost medium  for sharing local engineering research literature and  professional insights among engineers in Sri Lanka. Articles are published under two sections. Those based on Engineering  Research are in Section I while Section II contains articles of Professional Interest. It would have been ideal if the issues carried equal number of article in both sections. However it has been observed that contributions are mostly from the research of academics.

The institution on its part has bolstered resources available to authors. Today the ‘ENGINEER’ is a full colour printed journal physically matching the print and paper qualities of well-known quarterly journals of international stature.

That notwithstanding, even the digital version, that up to now got posted only in the institution’s website, now reaches directly the inboxes of emails of each and every member regardless of which ever part of the world they live in.

Honorariums paid to referees too has been significantly increased to improve the processing and reduce turnaround time of article submissions. The Council, at its last meeting, approved the introduction of deadlines before which submission must be made for publication in an issue of any specific quarter.

Citation of research articles appearing in the ‘ENGINEER’ in the work of other researchers worldwide and the encouragement of international authorship and refereeing are processes the institution is currently focused on. In this regard concerted effort is being put in getting the ‘ENGINEER’ published in international platforms reputed for publications of journals. The ‘ENGINEER’ is already published in the Sri Lanka Journals On-line (SLJOL), the Sri Lankan arm of the ‘Journals On Line’ (JOL) a platform with international exposure. Parallel efforts are underway to get the ‘ENGINEER’ indexed with international citation index website, ’Web of Science’

It remains for the members to make use of the facilitations the IESL is providing and contribute to the success of the ‘ENGINEER’ In the same spirit. I kindly request both the academics and practicing engineers to share their knowledge and experience through contributing to the journal. Thank you..!
