IESL NSW Lecture Series 2014‐2015
 

In 2014‐2015, IESL NSW Chapter organised a series of lectures/ presentations in order to share knowledge among engineers. The lectures were conducted by experienced engineers sharing their experiences and expertise in the industry as well as young engineers presenting the outcomes of their projects which have contributed to the advancements of the field of engineering. These lectures and interactive discussions drew a wide audience who were keen to gain a greater understanding in a variety of engineering topics.

 

Professor Anura Jayasumana, gave a presented on ‘Internet’ to ‘Internet of Things’ to ‘Internet of Everything’ at the Engineers Australia Auditorium in Chatswood on 26 November 2014. Anura is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Colorado State University and the Associate Director of Information Science and Technology Centre at Colorado State. He analysed the evolution of the internet landscape focusing on technologies aimed at bridging the gap between physical and digital worlds, emerging technologies and technology trends to provide a changing perspective from ‘Internet of things’ to ‘Internet of Everything’.

 

Adj Professor Wije Ariyaratne, Principal Engineer‐ Bridges, Bridge Engineering, Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), presented the RMS bridge load assessment process for fright vehicles on 11 May 2015. He explained why an effective and reliable bridge load assessment process for fright vehicles is vital for RMs to provide a viable, high performing and safe road network in NSW for all road users. His presentation primarily focused on how bridge load capacity assessment can be used to effectively manage an aging bridge asset particularly in an environment of increasing live loads including overview of bridge asset, load assessment methodology, and network assessment for freight vehicles by using several bridge load testing case studies.
