President's Corner - Development of Provincial Chapters

President's Corner

Dear Members,

Let me first wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year. In this President’s Corner I would like to focus on the development of Provincial Chapters and responsibility of our members in that endeavor.

Looking back at history it was the provincial Engineering association commenced in 1904 in the North Central Province that later got elevated as Engineering Association of Ceylon in 1906 and marched a long way to be established as the full-fledged Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka.

Today it has to play a vital role as the apex National body of Engineers in Sri Lanka ensuring internationally recognized and locally relevant standards in professional practice and Education in engineering, actively supporting national development and diligently serving our members as per our mission statement. Towards achieving the above objectives the present Provincial Chapters of the IESL were established, decentralizing the IESL activities. All Provincial Chapters had well played their roles in the past few years and have done good service towards provincial members.

The IESL is completing 110 years in the coming year, 2016, and as members of IESL we have to work hard to popularize Engineering among the General Public. In view of that all the provincial Chapters has to program yearly activities to fulfill the aspirations of our membership and that of the general public.

Annual Sessions and Annual General Meeting of provincial chapters were held during the past few months, and new Chairmen and Executive Committee members have been appointed for the new sessions. They now have a good opportunity to perform well as professional bodies in the Provinces.

The Most Important aspect of our profession is that Engineers must take Engineering decisions in a professional manner in rational ways. We should not allow local politicians to interfere, as they want, in engineering decisions. In the last few years, due to such interferences, our members have had to face unwanted consequences which tarnished the professional Image of Engineers in the society and as a consequence the general public lost their trust in engineers.

As solution to this problem Planning Circles of Provincial Chapter must be used as a tool to implement the engineering decisions in provincial development. Further, the synergy of the engineering fraternity is most important to avoid such circumstance and in convincing the heads of local bodies and other planners as well as politicians of our Engineering decisions in provincial developments.

Our intention is to develop the Provincial Chapters as pillars of strength of the institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka.

I take this opportunity to inform the membership that Eng. (Dr.) Jagath Peiris has been appointed as the CEO / Executive Secretary at the IESL Secretariat and will take over duties as such from 1st January, 2016. A fellow engineer and Corporate Member of the institution, he has done his doctorate in Business Administration in USA. Having held top positions and significant achievements in many leading organizations, he is coming with a wealth of experience in the private sector.

I would also like to express deep appreciations, on behalf of the IESL, to Eng. (Ms.) Arundathi Wimalasuriya for her yeoman service to the institution for being at the helm, as Executive Secretary since July , 2009 during a time when the IESL started spreading its wings, both island wide and overseas, by establishing local and overseas chapters and doing much of the spade work during the very critical period for the admittance of the IESL to the full member status of the Washington Accord and towards the success of which she will be dedicated in her new post with the institution.

Thank you.

Eng. Wimalasena Gamage
President of IESL
