The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) hosted its annual Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebration on Sunday at the Royal College Primary Grounds, bringing together nearly 200 members and their families for a day filled with cultural festivities and traditional games

Organized by the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee in collaboration with the Women Engineers’ Forum, the event kicked off at 8:00 AM and continued throughout the day, despite a spell of heavy morning rain. Spirits remained high as families gathered to celebrate the New Year in a vibrant and community-focused atmosphere.

The celebration featured a variety of traditional New Year games, including tug-of-war, sack races, lime-and-spoon races, and the always-entertaining bun-eating competition. The grounds were alive with laughter and friendly competition as children and adults alike joined in the fun.
Adding prestige to the occasion, the President of IESL and the President-Elect were present to show their support and engage with attendees. Their presence was a reminder of the importance of unity and fellowship within the engineering community.

“This event is not just about celebration—it’s about connection,” said a spokesperson for the Civil Engineering Sectional Committee. “We aim to strengthen the bonds among our members and their families through cultural appreciation and shared experiences.”

The New Year celebration served as a welcome break from the professional routine, offering engineers and their families a chance to relax, socialize, and embrace Sri Lanka’s rich heritage.
Families expressed their enjoyment of the event, many noting it as a highlight of their social calendar. Despite the initial rain, the day turned out to be one of warmth, laughter, and community spirit—a true testament to the resilience and unity of the IESL family.
