President's Corner

Dear Members,

While wishing you peace, prosperity and fulfillment of your personal and professional aspirations for the Sinhala and Hindu New Year I would like to remind you of the steady progress we have been making towards the enrichment of membership benefits and professional engagement of IESL with society and the government.

In this issue of SLEN you will find an article from our Infrastructure Committee, detailing out the infrastructure improvements happening at IESL to make it a better place for all our members. Membership is expecting to have electronic voting facility for IESL 2017 elections. The committee appointed for the above task has successfully floated an RFP. Now they are finalizing the best suitable solution. Implementation will follow in month of May and June.

The need for a new membership management system while revamping our corporate website had been discussed among membership and council members. The existing system has some limitations, for e.g. accommodating more than 15000 members in it. Further it lacks some important features and facilities. An RFP was floated to implement a state of art membership management system within current session expecting to give much better experience to membership and improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the IESL Secretariat.

The Young Member Section (YMS) of IESL has created huge enthusiasm among university students to join IESL. I have seen large number of students enrolled due the successful activities carried out at engineering faculties by YMS. In addition to JIY/UIY competitions, YMS has planned a competition using Raspberry Pi development platform. The water competitions are also lined up targeting the annual sessions.

Special committee is appointed under a Vice President to work on matters related to Free Trade Agreements. IESL is in close touch with Ministry of Development Strategies and International Trade (MODSIT) in formulating policies especially regarding immigration regulations involving professionals.

IESL has entered into discussion with Condominium Management Authority (CMA) in revising their policies guidelines and standards. Major institutions like BOI, UDA, CMC are the other parties involved in this discussion.

Engineering Education Policy for the country is a need of this hour. IESL has appointed a special committee to work on this matter. The committee comprises of IESL council members and Deans of engineering faculties of national universities.

IESL working towards implementation of Engineering Council, Sri Lanka (ECSL) which was enacted in March 2017. Together with the ECSL, the IESL hopes to turn a new chapter for the engineering profession in the country.

Thank you.
