The World's Tallest Skyscrapers Have A Dirty Little Secret
Supertall skyscrapers aren't necessarily built to fit as many people inside as possible--sometimes they're just aiming to be, well, really tall. Large portions of these buildings are designed to increase height, but remain unoccupied. Wasteful!

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, a not-for-profit organization that tracks the world's skyscrapers, just released some data on that subject. Surprise! Some really tall buildings don't need to be so tall.

Bookless Public Library Opens In Texas

An all-digital public library is opening today, as officials in Bexar County, Texas, celebrate the opening of the BiblioTech library. The facility offers about 10,000 free e-books for the 1.7 million residents of the county, which includes San Antonio.

On its website, the explains how its patrons can access free eBooks and audio books. To read an eBook on their own device, users must have the 3M Cloud Library app, which they can link to their library card.

Quantum cryptography is coming to mobile phones

The first practical way of carrying out quantum cryptography using a mobile phone has been developed by researchers at Nokia and the University of Bristol in the UK. Quantum cryptography – which allows messages to be sent with complete secrecy – is currently limited to banks and other organizations that can afford to have expensive and extremely sensitive quantum-optical components at both ends of a communications link. What the Nokia/Bristol team has done is to work out how to perform "quantum key distribution" (QKD) using simple and potentially inexpensive "client" electronics that could be integrated within a single chip.

'Highly programmable' DNA cubes could be used for drug delivery

3D cages made from strands of DNA could be used as a nanotechnology solution for drug delivery. Cubes of DNA, with molecular tentacles, or chains, attached on each corner, spontaneously create water-repellant carriages that could be used to carry drugs.

In research carried out at McGill University in Canada, lipid-tipped DNA chains attached to DNA cubes folded back inside, creating places for hydrophobic molecules to be carried.

Waste CO2 Could Be Source of Extra Power

Power-generating stations worldwide release 12 billion tons of carbon dioxide every year as they burn coal, oil or natural gas; home and commercial heating plants release another 11 billion tons. A team of Dutch scientists has a use for it. Power plants could, they argue, pump the carbon dioxide through water or other liquids and produce a flow of electrons – and therefore more electricity.

The Internet Must Go

Excellent mockumentary about how and why Internet service providers such as Verizon, AT&T, Time Warner and Comcast are pushing to eliminate or suppress the net neutrality.

Over the years they’ve spent billions to build the pipes and towers that bring Americans the Internet. Today they face a crisis, there’s just too much traffic. (Un)fortunately they have a solution – the Internet as it exists today must go.

Instead of everything going at the same speed, the way it does now, they will create a fast lane and the slow lane on the Internet. Giant companies who can pay them more will be in the fast lane where will be easier for people to find them. Everyone else can take the slow road. They’ll also create innovative new ways to charge Internet users for the sites they want.

Current IESL by Laws allow a grace period of unprecedented 11 months (Nov 30, 2013). Through the new Membership Management System, members who have not paid have been alerted via email and for this year only, reminder letters have been posted. All those who lose will have to go through a reinstatement process as per the by laws which is similar to obtaining a new membership under prevailing rules!!. Next year new laws will come into place to further tighten the process and grace periods. So please pay your dues and be considerate towards policies and ethics of the IESL.
