The Public Lecture organised by Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee on “ Unleashing the potential of people ” was successfully held at the Wimaladharmasuriya Auditorium of Institute of Engineers Sri Lanka from 5.30 pm on wards on 24th May 2018.
The resource person was Mr. Sapumal Thibbotuwawa who is a Mechanical Engineering graduate from University of Moratuwa and was the National Talent Management Director of AIESEC in Sri Lanka. He was also part of the Global People Development Task Force coaching Taiwan, Australia, Korea and Romania on global talent development initiatives. He was also an international trainer and conference manager with experience in 26 local and international conferences including conferences in Indian, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. In AIESEC Sapumal discovered his passion for people development.
Sapumal started his HR career at South Asia Gateway Terminals (Pvt) Ltd better known as SAGT, as a Management Trainee in HR. In SAGT, he has handled Talent Management and Learning & Development portfolios before joining Unilever Sri Lanka as a Recruitment & Employer Branding Specialist. He was recognized by several awards at Unilever including “Global Shining Star Award”, South Asia’s Best Recruiter” and “South Asia HR Directors Award for Technological Innovation”. Sapumal joined Fonterra Brands Sri Lanka as Manager – People & Culture. In this role Sapumal was leading recruitment, learning, employee engagement and talent management portfolios for the Sri Lankan Opco with strong links to regional and international HR teams. Currently, he is working as Talent & Organizational Development Consultant – Sri Lanka & Middle East Africa (MEA). Sapumal has obtained the Professional Qualification in HRM from IPM, Sri Lanka and currently reading for the MBA at Australia Institute of Business (AIB).
People Management from an Engineers point of view & his experience in managing people across different countries and cultures were discussed during his presentation. The lecturer explains that how he met Imran Khan at the CIMA Global Leaders’ Summit in Sri Lanka and impressed by hearing Khan’s speech about never compromising on ambition .

How the lecturer look at people with a Engineers eye and what qualities of Engineers makes them better people managers were discussed in detail. The things that Engineers could do better to help people that they lead and make the best versions of themselves were described taking real life examples. This interesting session was followed by a Questions & Answers session which extended to 30 minutes.
