The first Sri Lankan President of Toastmasters International (TMI) Distinguished Toastmasters Arunasalam Balraj, the current President for Toastmaster Year 2017/18, says, “toastmasters clubs are communication gyms; members come and do their public speaking workouts”. If you go to a gym for the first time, what would you be doing before practicing weight lifting exercises? I’m sure, many of us would opt to do lighter exercises for few sessions at the beginning to make sure our muscles are tightened enough to face the real challenges.

Having its head office in USA, TMI is the world leader in communication and leadership development which functions in 141 countries serving a membership of 352,000 who meets every two weeks in 16,400 clubs worldwide. TMI has also developed a training program called “Speechcraft”, a lighter version of Toastmaster Experience which will help a new comer to,

  • Eliminate the fear of public speaking
  • Improve presentation skills
  • Connect with the Audience, relating the message
  • Let the body speak for him / her
  • Enhance listening skills
  • Build confidence, unleash the leader in him / her

Just like in the gym, an individual before starting his Toastmasters Journey, could attend a Speechcraft program to make himself/herself comfortable with public speaking workouts. Following the mission of TMI “To empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders”, IESL Toastmaster Club is starting its next Speechcraft program on 23rd January 2018.

The Program will run for 10 consecutive Tuesdays and after the grand finale on the 11th day, participants will be invited to join the IESL Toastmasters Club as a regular member. Participants get the opportunity to deliver more than three speeches, play roles, introduce other speakers and serve as speech evaluators during the program. They will also participate in Table Topics where they learn impromptu speaking skills. Organizing the Grand Finale on their own, helps participants learn leadership and team building skills

Educational presentations are conducted by experienced Toastmasters who have excelled in the respective subjects. Importance of verbal and nonverbal communication skills in public speaking is highlighted and practiced during these sessions. Club members advise and evaluate the participants and provide instructions for speech preparation and speaking techniques. Thus, participants can learn in a safe, supportive environment and reap many benefits.

Some IESL members sent their sons and daughters for the last Speechcraft program and there were many senior Engineers and other professionals. Thus age, indeed is not a barrier, but rather an enabler to generate diverse and creative ideas, The speeches and the communication scope therefore is enlarged and enriched. At Toastmasters, it is you who set up the platform for self-development of yourself and others around you. Indeed, that is what, we as toastmasters do promise. We promise to help the club maintain the positive, friendly environment necessary for all members to learn and grow. We understand that each participant is unique, has certain skills and abilities, goals and ambitions, and strength and weaknesses. However we share a common platform for everyone to learn and grow.

A professional who won’t speak effectively, has no automatic advantage, over an individual who can speak.

Be our guest, come and join with IESL Toastmasters Club and share the stellar learning environment. Let it be a leader or a communicator, find the best in you. Be the best you can be. Be the person you would like to be!
