The Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka, NSW Chapter (IESL NSW Chapter), Engineers’ Nite was held on 13 June 2015, in grand style at Castle Grande, Castle Hill.  President of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka Eng (Dr) S B Wijekoon, President of Engineers Australia - Sydney Division, Bruce Harvard, National President Engineers Australia 2013 Dr. Marlene Kanga, and the IESL NSW Chapter Chair Waruna Kaluarachchi graced this occasion. The key note address was delivered by Scientia Professor Veena Sahajwalla, SMaRT Centre University of New South Wales.

 

The Engineering Conference, held on 12th June 2015 at the Engineers Australia Auditorium, Chatswood, preceded the Engineers nite 2015. The objective of excellence awards is to recognise the commitment of the engineers of Sri Lankan background living in NSW and ACT, for the wellbeing of the community and the environment as well as for driving innovation and excellence in the industry. These awards are offered in three categories: the best research paper; the best innovation and the best infrastructure development project.

 

From the large number of submission, the following six outstanding submissions were presented at the conference:

   
bullete "Assessment of optimum width and longevity of a permeable reactive barrier installed in an acid sulfate soil terrain" by Dr Udeshini Pathirage from the University of Wollongong;
   
bullete "Early detection of spam mobile apps" by Mr Suranga Seneviratne from the University New South Wales;
   
bullete Transmission line modelling using Power Line Systems Computer Aided Design and Drafting (PLS-CADD) simulating tools and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology" by Ms Amali Wickramasinghe from Endeavour Energy;
   
bullete "Computer vision based indoor localization module for multi-rotor aerial vehicles" by Dr Dinuka Abeywardena from the University of Technology Sydney;
   
bullete "An Impulse Radio Ultra Wideband (IR-UWB) wireless capsule endoscopy device” by Dr Kasun Thotahewa from Commscope Inc.; and
   
bullete "Young sewage treatment plant, reuse scheme and sewer network" by Ms Deependra Puswella from NSW Public Works.

 

The presentation of Engineering Excellence Awards was taken place at the Gala Dinner on 13 June 2015. This annual event was attended by over 300 engineers, industry experts and academia and sponsored by NSW Public Works (Gold sponsor), Fulton Hogan and Dulux.  It provided ample opportunities for networking among fellow engineers and strengthening collaboration initiatives.
