BSESC Progress Report – 2018 Q1
 
BSESC Meetings
 

BSESC had four meeting during 2018 Q1. The number of members participated for each of these meeting is 33 (in Jan.), 31 (in Jan.), 45 (in Feb.) & 33 (in Mar.) respectively. A monthly BSESC meeting consists of three sections namely progress updates by the task leaders, discussion and the knowledge sharing presentation.

Knowledge Sharing Presentations
 

BSESC had four knowledge sharing presentations for its members within 2018 Q1. These sessions were organized by Eng.Dilan Thilanga & Eng. Wasantha Vithanage.

Engineering Heritage Exploration
 

The project work related to the study of the micro water management systems in the ancient city, Anuradhapura is progressing with the contributions of the subcommittee members.

The following are the tasks done during 2018 Q1.

 

1. Development of a 2-D CAD drawing of the Ranmasu Uyana site & surrounding with the combination of several manual drawings (this to be further developed to a 3-D model in future with a software like Revit or SolidWorks.)

 

2. Getting the official letters with the IESL president’s endorsement to the relevant authorities to get the necessary permissions & approvals

 

3. Preparation & coordination work related to the next site visit to get the measurements, levels of the location with a site survey in the selected areas of the site

 

4. Further studies on the literature survey on the engineering aspects of the design of the ancient micro water management systems in Sri Lanka

 

The BSESC Heritage Exploration team is led by Eng. Priyan Bellana & Eng. Suran Fernando.

 
Building Code
 

BSESC has committed that it will prepare the TOR of the Building Code for the country.

 

On 27th February, BSESC Chairman, Eng. Samantha Gunawardana participated for a meeting at CIDA to discuss on the Building Code. Eng. Gunawardana has made a presentation on the International Building Code at this meeting in which more than sixty participants represented different organizations like SLIA, UDA etc.

 
BSESC Public Lectures
 

BSESC has organized two public lectures during 2018 Q1.

 

The first was done by Prof. Arumugam Nallanathan (Professor of Wireless Communication, IEEE Fellow) who is an internationally recognized expert on IoT. This was jointly organized by BSESC & & IEEE Sri Lanka Section.

 

The second public lecture was done by Eng. Kapila Peiris (Research Fellow at NERDC). The lecturer proposed an alternative interpretation on the concept of sustainable development through the 2nd law of thermodynamics.

BSESC CPD Courses
 

The CPD on ‘Designing of Fire Detection & Protection Systems’ started on 20th January 2018 with over 90 participants.

Eng. Koojana Weerasinghe & Eng. Lakmal isuru is leading the BSESC subcommittee on CPDs. The organizing work of the ‘Energy Management’ and ‘Vertical Transportation’ CPDs for this session is also now in progress.
 
Subcommittee Meeting – Heritage Exploration & Techno
 

On 13th March Heritage Exploration & Techno subcommittee members had a meeting at IESL to discuss the progress of the activities and way forward.

BSESC CSR Project
 

The BSESC CSR subcommittee led by Eng. Danesh Subasinghe & Eng. (Ms.) Chamini Jayarandika has initiated a project to propose energy saving improvements for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) for Children. With the findings and readings taken at the LRH, the subcommittee is now working on a proposal to introduce viable energy saving options that will eventually reduce the energy cost of the hospital.
