President's Corner
During the month of March the public’s attention was focused towards the engineers. At the beginning of the month the President of the country stressed the responsibility of the intellectual community at the Annual General Meeting of the Public Service Engineers' Association. President categorically mentioned that the responsibility of the intellectual community is not to leave the country protesting that salaries and facilities are not enough, but to join the campaign to build the nation for the sake of future generations.
With all these information, what I would like to request the engineers is, be vigilant, there certainly is a threat. Somebody may argue that the ETCA has not been signed yet, so without knowing the real fact, what we do is kind of unnecessary preparation and motivation of public. However, predicting the future scenario is not that challenging, because “which country on earth that is stronger in terms of its political and economic status than us, would sign an agreement that is more advantageous to us than to them?” I request the engineers to think this seriously.

Sri Lankan Professionals & Proposed India - Sri Lanka ETCA - by Eng. Arjuna Manamperi
On September 17th, 2015 a watershed event was organized by a small group of motivated engineers ( SLEA - Sri Lanka Engineers Association) at the Foundation Institute to educate professionals of this country about the negative impacts of proposed CEPA ( comprehensive economic partnership agreement) with India that had been in the workings for years. ISL CEPA was withdrawn in the Parliament on Dec 9th by the Prime Minister. During that period, UPM ( United Professionals Movement) consisting professional bodies ( including IESL) covering all major professional disciplines was formed to help the country with a strong belief that professionals must take part in National Policy making as much as executing them.
A Road Map for an Energy Independent Sri Lanka by 2030 - by Eng. Parakrama Jayasinghe
The need and urgency for achieving a status of energy independence for Sri Lanka has been discussed with increasing frequency in the recent years. This is driven by the two related and increasingly compelling trends seen, one of the end of the fossil fuel era on one hand and the bitter truth of the global warming and climate change which is now impossible to ignore any more. Of particular relevance to Sri Lanka has been the more and more disturbing trend of the economic and fiscal impacts.
How the engineers of Sri Lanka can lead and exploit the Deepwater Gas reserves in Mannar basin - by Eng. V. Vijayaraghavan FIEAust, CEng (UK), CPEng
On the 4th of November 2015 which was Wednesday at 5.15 p.m. I presented a lecture to the Engineers of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium, on the topic of “Designing and Construction of a Floating Production and offshore storage (FPOS) and I was pleasantly surprised at the enthusiasm and the knowledge of the young engineers who had come to listen to me. They were smart and curious, and they had a lot in common with a desire to make a change in the field of engineering. Post presentation Q&A discussion with these fascinating engineers covered a wide variety of offshore engineering issues and demonstrated the appreciation that they had for an experienced member of their profession.
Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee Chair Eng. Arjuna Manamperi visited 20th of Jan. 2016 to the Sri Lankan start up company Vega in their office plus design/manufacturing facility located at the TRACE Park, Maradana (formerly Tripoli Market) to take a first hand look at their ground breaking project to build the "fastest" electric car. Vega team was a MESC booth partner at the 2015 Techno.
Sewage Work Engineering Excellence of Ancient Sri Lankans - A landmark Evidence. Findings from Bogoda Temple - by Eng. H.M.W.D. Herath
It is well known that the Bogoda temple (Bogoda Raja Maha Viharaya) is a famous archaeological site situated in the Uva province, Sri Lanka. The live wooden bridge combined with a corridor canopy roof with attractive wooden carvings are the historical features of this place. Concerning the engineering excellences of our ancestors, the wooden deck structure supported by wooden piers are the proofs of the design and construction capability of the technologists. Identifying the importance of this bridge in the road construction the government has taken steps to model the bridge and establish it as a land mark of the local road construction technology and kept it in the Highway Museum at Peradeniya (Colombo- Kandy Road).
Geometrical Traps on Mountainous roads in Sri Lanka - by Eng H.M.W.D. Herath,
We can see a few road geometrical traps on recently constructed roads. These traps also do not indicate any signs until vehicles meet up with accidents in unexpected ways. Unfortunately, these traps are not taken in to account deeply by the road designers involved with designs and contractors during the constructions.
Life before & after the Charter - Learn, Educate, Act, Drive - LEAD - by Eng. Arjuna Manamperi
Leadership is situational. The greatest satisfaction a LEADER gets is the amazing feeling of "self worth" when he/she does volunteer work and help others to lead; the exhilarating feeling of making a positive difference even when it's done through another. You are a LEADER. I appeal you to lead irrespective of your age, membership level, field of work, location of work, language skills, etc. You know the situations where you can lead. Let's break it down to few "actions" and we being engineers I have boiled it down to Key Performance Indicators ( KPI).
