As you already know the IESL celebrated its 110th anniversary on 6th January at IESL Headquarters. There was all night pirith chanting ceremony on 3rd January followed by daana on 4th and multi religious activities on 6th. It was a kind of a time for reflection of the good work that IESL has been doing for the last 110 years and also a time to pay gratitude to the past presidents and engineers, who carried IESL forward to the present generation. Parallel to these events, several chapters too organized a number of activities to commemorate the IESL anniversary.

Are Universal Socket Outlets Electrically Safe? By Eng. S. R. Munasinghe
There have been many deaths, especially of children, getting electrocuted owing to the use of non standard socket outlets and extension cords. Absence of a single national standard requires universal sockets, adapters, and extension cords with universal sockets. All universal sockets compromise safety. In an effort to prevent such deaths and as a mater of public safety , the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka ( PUCSL) along with many professionals, academics and members of IESL have been working for over the past six months, to analyse options and discuss issues involved in standardising the plugs and socket outlets in Sri Lanka.
The art of communication begins with listening for which silence is an imperative. The knowledge and experience, one has acquired, need to be suspended for listening. It is called ‘bracketing”. Kant thus argued that humans can never have direct access to reality, but only to the contents of their minds. The rational mind would see exchange of ideas as a discussion or debate but intuition is required to take part in a real exchange what is known as a dialogue.

The Information and Communications Technology Committee (ICTC) of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka has set nine objectives to serve members. Of these, the activity to implement 2015-AGM decision to bring Online Voting as an option to the corporate members is paramount. ICTC will setup an Online Voting System to elect 2016/2017 Council as its primary objective for the session 2015/2016. In addition, there are more member focused objectives and a few secretariat operations related objectives set by the committee.
2015 IEEE 10th International Conference in Industrial and Information Systems (ICIIS 2015)
Dissemination of knowledge is a vital aspect in the development of science and technology. A brilliant idea or a great discovery will be soon forgotten if it is not shared properly, after rigorous scrutiny, at a suitable forum and shared with the appropriate scientific community. This is the essence of a conference: to provide a forum to scrutinize and disseminate scientific and technological knowledge. In the modern era, it is not sufficient to communicate knowledge with a small group in a region or a country. The value of a conference is increased multi-fold if the conference is truly international – reaching a wider and more global community.
