EDITORIAL D-SLEN-14

Year of Profession al Excellence

This would be the last SLEN before the AGM to be held in October. The President - IESL declared the year as the Year of Professional Excellence and we have achieved an even greater success, notably the greatest achievement of being a signatory country of the Washington Accord.

Further, with this editorial, I am completing two years in office as the editor/SLEN

As you all know we have tried different means to get our members to be actively involved with IESL, though not always with success. We have witnessed that the attendance in lots of activities have grown exponentially, especially in some memorial lectures and some other outbound activities. Still I was not so impressed with the attendance for Annual Sessions. This year we had tried several new trials such as pre-registration, nominations of members by their respective institutions, circulating the Programme At A Glance quite early to plan their schedule etc. hoping that this would encourage young engineers to attend the annual sessions so that we all could treat the annual session as the forum to share our findings and new thoughts with fellow engineers. By attending and actively participating, we all will encourage those engineers who have some intention to do novel things. I am happy that my engineer colleagues have responded positively to our efforts and attended the Annual Sessions in their numbers. The Glance Programme had proved very handy and optimized the visits to Colombo of those traveling form other provinces. Meanwhile, I also thank the senior engineers who met their moral obligation by releasing their junior engineers to attend the annual sessions. Many countries consider this as a time of reunion and it is not rare to see more than a thousand engineers attending their annual sessions.

I thank you for your active participation during the year and your feedback has been very fruitful. We always do respect your ideas for improvement and please remember that we have reserved a section called Letters to the Editor. Month of October will be full of activities and your participation in all these would be an immense encouragement to those who voluntarily sacrifice their time for the benefit of the engineering profession in the country.
