During the month of December, as President of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, I was able to represent IESL, together with the Honorary Treasurer of IESL, at the 30th Indian Engineering Congress organized by the Institution of Engineers, India hosted by Assam State Centre of Institution of Engineers, India.
According to Purdue University website, Multidisciplinary Engineering is designed for those who plan to practice engineering as a career but whose specific career goals cannot be accommodated within one of the traditional engineering fields. This requires considerable flexibility and it will permit anybody to develop an individual plan of study to meet educational goals that require bringing together multiple engineering disciplines at an advanced level to solve societal challenges. However, all these engineers must acquire the basics/fundamentals of engineering. This will otherwise make an engineer without a solid platform to solve an engineering problem.

IESL President Elect, Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, unanimously elected FEISCA President
Federation of Engineering Institutions of South and Central Asia (FEISCA) has bestowed the honour of being its President for the next two years on Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, President Elect of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL). Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda, has been unanimously elected to the post at the 14th General Assembly of the FEISCA held on 18 February, 2016 at Kathmandu, Nepal.
The Hidden Face of Coal Power by Eng. Parakrama Jayasinghe
The government, on the advice of the CEB has been aggressively promoting the implementation of the Coal Power plant at Sampur. The argument brought forward is the dire prediction of an impending power shortage in 2017 and the promise of cheap electricity. This is now reinforced by the euphoria of reported savings by the operation of the Norochcholai Coal Power Plant as published in the Sunday Leader of 24th January 2016. However, as usual the reportage is one sided ignoring all the ill effects and non disclosed costs and hidden dangers of coal power to the country.
Sri Lanka: A Systematic Country Diagnostic - World Bank Report
Sri Lanka is in many respects a development success story. Growth has averaged over 6 percent per year in the past decade and poverty declined from 22.7% in 2002 to 6.1% in 2012/13. Sri Lanka performed very well on the Millennium Development Goals and has ended its internal armed conflict. The country has ample opportunities to build on its success due to its enviable location for trade, relatively educated work force and remarkable natural assets. In order to sustain its progress on the twin goals and fulfill its development potential, there are five challenges which need to be addressed.
A survey of engineering education throughout the world
Only around 16% of those who qualify actually get to enter state university system ( 60% of those who sit for A/L) per year. That's around 10% of all A/L students. Of those admitted to the state university system, around 1,700 enter the engineering faculties per year. Graduate Output from state engineering faculties is around the same or slightly less. In total, Sri Lanka produces around 2000 engineering or related graduates ( state and private) per year.
Over the centuries there have been many discoveries and inventions based on electricity. Names of two of its greatest pioneers and inventors stand out foremost as we think of electricity in the modern world. They are Thomas Alva Edison and Nicola Tesla. On a personal note, as an Electrical Engineer in Canada for the last 15 years and having been a participant at many seminars, training sessions and workshops in all three North American Countries, there was no meeting of professionals in this field that commenced without mentioning these two great scientists – Edison and Tesla.
Class B1; The Workhorse of Sri Lankan Steam by Eng. D U L Peeligama
With its 4’ 8” diameter boiler set high above the plate frames and the smokebox supported by an angled steel casting that also enclosed the cylinder supply lines, the Class B1 steam locomotives of Sri Lanka displayed a majestic look that no other locomotives of the country came close to mimicking. To top it all off was a large steam dome and short squat smoke stack laced with a “Capuchon” or raised half lip, to direct the smoke upwards and backwards, making the locomotives the most handsome looking of all locomotive designs to grace the Sri Lankan railroads of the steam era.

Owing to the more or less efforts rendered by the responsible authorities during the past few decades, Sri Lanka is now approaching 100% electrification of its population. Electricity has become an easily accessible commodity to the public. However, a question arises as to whether the consumer is satisfied with what they get. Lacks of reliability and quality of the power supply have been the major issues to dissatisfy the customers at present. Simply power system reliability means the availability of a continuous and adequate supply of power and power quality means the delivered parameters of the supply (i.e. voltage and frequency) are within acceptable limits.

This mega Telecommunication Engineering Project was commenced in year 2012, primarily focusing on developing mobile network coverage in rural areas, where ICT reachability is minimum or non-existed.
