New Cool Features of the IESL Membership Management System

Dear Colleagues,

We have introduced some cool features and want to bring them to your attention.

1. Search Box for the Membership Management System's web content

This is located on Home Page under the banner, above Quick Links ( see figure). You can enter key words to lookup various web pages "within MMS" that contain them. This will help you if you don't know the exact menu under which certain content appear. Please understand, this tool searches only the content on web pages (including Events, Announcements, News) and not in MMS databases such as Directories. For the latter, you have secure search features once you go to a directory, especially MEMBERS directory which has advanced search capabilities.

2. 3D View during live streaming of IESL Public Lectures

As you know, most IESL Public Lectures are live streamed for those who are unable to come to the event and keen to see them on the same day from where ever they are (instead of the archived version which you can access later by going to Resources > IESL Videos>>Public Lectures tab). Our event announcements that come to your email indicate how to get to a live stream.

Live stream link is in the News and Events page (see the screen shot of this page). The "green button" takes you to live stream page. The next scheduled live stream is under the "blue banner" as a notification to you to make a note in your calendar.

Here is a screen shot of how the 3D feature looked when we did it first time on March 25th. It puts the presenter's window clearly and the screen slides are shown in 3D giving a rich look. We use web service LiveStream.

Note to those who use live streaming service: You can watch from any device connected to Internet and we strongly recommend minimum "download" speed of 250 Bps ( bits per second) and ideally 500 Bps or above for a smooth viewing experience. If you encounter freezing of screen ( you can hear the voice of the presenter but he/she or slides are not moving), please refresh the URL link of the webpage you are watching. You will be back on track.

This March we began using 4G Mobile technology for high speed uploads of our content. We use services from Mobitel and Lanka Bell. This has dramatically improved our users experience because, feed bit rate is far more than the users typical download speeds ( at user end a buffer is created for a smoother experience). 4G mobile modem/routers enable us to live stream from any location where 4G access is available ( most major cities in Sri Lanka now has this capability)

3. Engineer Journal is now digital!!

This is very exciting to all of us. Not just the ICT team but the editorial team of The Engineer. Engineer journal's first digital version came to your email boxes in March of 2015. (Read the web version here). It's a quarterly journal. We have been publishing the PDF version for more than two years (copies: Resources >> IESL SLEN/Journal). Yet, it's the true digital version that is now "pushed" to you.

We are now fully digital with our News Letter and Journal. Thus, a team lead by Librarry Commitee and ICT Commitee is considering ways and means to take those public!

Now to few re-reminders:

1. If you are not getting auto email blasts including event notifications to your email included in MMS, please login to MyIESL (home page Quick Links). Go to Member Self Service portal. In your Profile page click Email Subscriptions and check whether both boxes "Email Announcements" and "Manual Email Blasts" are checked. If not, edit those to have them checked by clicking on Edit Profile.

2. Update your profile with accurate data that only you know, to get better service. Those are, your mobile phone ( please use proper syntax +country code number - no parenthesis, spaces, hyphens, etc. and don't forget the + sign) , complete postal address ( please ensure when you type spelling is correct of Cities and Countries, also right information is entered into right field - don't type City in the second address line just because you don't have a second line to add! Use City field for city), your IESL Provincial / District Chapter (most practical to you), your educational information, professional information, and career information (again please use right spelling and standard abbreviations). The idea is to:

a. give very important and powerful search capabilities to IESL staff and IESL committees, chapters, etc. to serve you better

b. give your colleagues a chance to find you to network with you. Please remember, you can decide what's to be shown to the public, members, and staff by changing the default settings in your Profile Privacy.

In a previous digital SLEN we gave detailed instruction video on how to.
