Trailblazing Lady Engineers of Sri Lanka

The engineering profession in Sri Lanka remains largely a male stronghold with women engineers constituting much less than their demographic representation in the country. The situation however is better now than what it was about four decades ago. The distinction of being the first to break, their way in to what were then pure male bastions belongs to a unique few who had the courage in addition to their intellect to take up the challenge and succeed.

In the video interview below the Digital SLEN brings to you the story of two such unique personalities whose names shall be written in the annals of the history of the engineering profession in Sri Lanka as paving the way for women to enter and emerge as successful practitioners of the profession.

Eng. (Dr.) Mrs. Premala Sivaprakasapillai Sivasegaram has the unique distinction of being the First Lady Engineer as well as the First Lady Civil Engineer in Sri Lanka.

Eng. (Ms.) Lanka Haturusinha has the unique distinction of being the First Lady President of the premier professional body of the engineering profession in the country, the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka.

In this 2-part video interview they recount their days;

Video 1 : Treading Untrodden Paths

First as bright eyed school girls who decide to leave aside convention to tread untrodden paths to their destiny in the male dominated environs of the Faculty of Engineering.

Video 2 : Debut as Engineers

Their debut as engineers, prejudices with regard to employment, struggle for acceptance as equals in a male dominated profession and crowning glory as successful engineers.
