| Washington Accord and……. |

We all know that recently IESL received the full signatory status of the Washington Accord and you will be getting more news in a special SLEN dedicated to that.
However, when I circulated this message among my friends, some of them asked me a very simple question; “what is Washington Accord?”

| IESL Becomes a Washington Accord Signatory |

The IESL achieved perhaps its most significant achievement in the international arena when it became a permanent member of the Washington Accord on Friday, 13th June, 2014 at the International Engineering meeting held at Wellington, New Zealand.
Sri Lanka, our motherland, thus joins an elite club of developed countries (Australia, Canada, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, China, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, UK and USA ) whose accrediting bodies, being signatories to this accord, mutually recognize all four year full time engineering degrees accredited by them in their respective countries. The national road network has evolved over more than one century. The beginnings of relatively modern paved roads date back to the late 19th century, when a system of trunk roads already provided basic spatial coverage for all major communities. At independence in 1948, Sri Lanka had about 11,000 km of trunk roads, of which 7,000 km were paved.

The engineering profession in Sri Lanka remains largely a male stronghold with women engineers constituting much less than their demographic representation in the country. The situation however is better now than what it was about four decades ago. The distinction of being the first to break, their way in to what were then pure male bastions belongs to a unique few who had the courage in addition to their intellect to take up the challenge and succeed.

The Digital SLEN had the pleasure of video interviewing Eng. Waruna Kaluarachchi – Vice Chair of the IESL New South Wales Chapter, who is on a short visit to Sri Lanka. In the video clip below he explains the services rendered by the chapter to engineers of Sri Lankan origin working in New South Wales, Australia. sharing of knowledge and experience gained by its members working in Australia with the parent body and promoting IESL in the international arena.
