IESL - UIY Committee
Undergraduate Inventor of the Year (UIY) is a committee in IESL that aims to encourage and stimulate undergraduate’s interest in inventions related to engineering. It also focuses on providing an opportunity for engineering undergraduates to organize and present their inventions.

UIY 2023
This program is a unique platform for recognizing and rewarding the nation's most outstanding and innovative undergraduate students and showcasing the emerging ideas and inventions that will shape the future. Judges will evaluate each entry for its originality, inventiveness, scope of use and potential social, environmental or economic value. Winners will enjoy exclusive cash prizes, awards, certificates and the opportunity to patent their inventions.

- Calling for applications - 4th June 2023
- Closing of applications - 30th June 2023
- Preliminary round - 19th August 2023
- Second round (if necessary) - 16th September 2023
- Final Competition - 8th October 2023
Prizes
- wards and cash prizes for the 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place.
- 1st Place - LKR 200,000/-
- 2nd Place - LKR 150,000/-
- 3rd Place - LKR 100,000/-
- Awards and cash prize of LKR 30,000/- for the remaining finalists.
- Awards and cash prize of LKR 20,000/- for the most popular invention.
- Awards and cash prize of LKR 20,000/- for the best market viable invention.
- Valuable certificates will be given for the finalists.
- One year of free IESL student/associate membership for the finalists.
- For selected inventions, a mentor will be provided for further development of the invention and will be guided throughout the patent receiving process.
Patent Criteria
- Provide the opportunity for some selected inventions to patent their inventions through Sri Lanka Inventors Commission.
- Entries are ineligible if
- The invention has already been patented or disclosed by another party/inventor, or
- You have been issued a patent for the invention more than one year prior to the date of submission to the competition.
