Agreement Reached to Strengthen Cooperation between the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) has expressed its willingness to work collaboratively with institutions affiliated to the Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as with projects implemented under the Ministry, in order to support the development of the science, technology, and innovation sector.

A discussion in this regard was held recently at the Ministry of Science and Technology under the patronage of the Minister of Science and Technology, Professor Krishantha Abeysena.

During the meeting, representatives of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka elaborated on the support that could be extended to projects implemented across various engineering disciplines with a focus on economic development, as well as on the diverse expertise and resources available within the IESL across multiple engineering fields.

Special attention was given to strengthening engineering and technical collaboration with institutions operating under the Ministry of Science and Technology, particularly the National Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERDC) and the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies (ACCIMT).

The two parties also exchanged views on potential avenues for collaboration that would yield benefits to the country as well as to both institutions, including opportunities for securing foreign assistance and investments for engineering research.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister expressed his appreciation to the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka for its willingness to deploy its expertise and resources for the development of the country. It was further decided that the two parties would enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the near future and proceed with related activities accordingly.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary to the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mr. Mohamed Navavi, along with senior officials of the Ministry, and a delegation from the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka led by its President, Eng. Kosala Kamburadeniya.
