The portrait of Eng. Professor T M Pallewatta, Immediate Past President of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka was unveiled by Eng. Professor S B S Abayakoon, President of the IESL, at a ceremony attended by Past Presidents and Council Members on Friday, 30th July 2020 at around 4.30 pm.
" Eng. Prof. Tirath Manojya Pallewatta is Senior Professor in Civil Engineering and the former Head of the Department of Civil Engineering of the Open University of Sri Lanka. After schooling at Hena Road Junior School, Mt. Lavinia and Royal College, Colombo 07, he gained admission to the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Moratuwa in 1981.He graduated from the University of Moratuwa with First Class Honours in Civil Engineering becoming the Valedictorian of his batch in 1986, securing Dr. A. N. S. Kulasinghe Award for the Best Civil Engineering graduate and Award for the Best In-Plant trainee.After working at Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau and National Water Supply & Drainage Board in Structural & Construction Engineering, he received a scholarship in 1987 from the Dutch Government for getting engaged in postgraduate studies.
In 1989 he obtained Master of Engineering in Structural Engineering and Construction from the Asian Institute of Technology, again becoming the Valedictorian of his batch, securing the Mahesh Varma Award for the Best Graduand, which was recognized by the Government of Japan by awarding him a scholarship for Doctoral study.Upon receiving his Doctorate in Structural Engineering in 1993 from the prestigious University of Tokyo with Excellent grading, he returned to Sri Lanka to get engaged in the field of Structural & Construction Engineering until joining the Academia as a Senior Lecturer and rising to the level of Senior Professor in Civil Engineering.
He became a Chartered Engineer in 1996, was elevated to status of Fellow of the Institution of Engineers in 2002, and was made an International Professional Engineer in 2008. He has served the Council of the IESL and Standing Committees from 1998 in various capacities, rising through Vice President, President-Elect to the Post of President in 2018"
