Dear Members,

Debate competition - රටක් වටින දෙබස්

The Professional Affairs committee of the IESL has decided to conduct a debate competition - රටක් වටින දෙබස් - among teams from Organizations in the engineering sector.

Objectives are to enhance engineers' public speaking skills, critical thinking, and research skills and educate them on current hot topics within the society.

Debate topics for all the rounds will be based on "social opportunities" (not problems/issues) that engineers can and should seize to provide solutions. The first competition of රටක් වටින දෙබස් will be conducted in Sinhala with similar competitions in other languages to follow later.

An example of a suggested topic would be as below,

  • For  the next 25yrs, our main target for energy source may continue to be fossil fuel  or it may change to  the use of  renewable energy.

Just two or three topics only will be used for the first round and each team will comprise of five members including one reserve and four participants. Each organization could nominate a maximum of three separate teams, each with a team leader through whom all correspondences will be done.

An independent panel of judges will decide on the winners. While there will be a few rounds to select winners these debates may be broadcast over the television network from the second or third round.

Participants will be issued certificates and winners presented with prizes.

All rules and regulations will be sent to you in due course and the competition will be held at the IESL after 5.00 PM.

Please make necessary arrangements to establish team/teams within the organizations and inform to the under mentioned before 31st July, 2017.

For further clarifications you may contact CEO/ES, Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka or Eng. Lalith Pallegama on or 0777-346083.
