    IESL commemorated the 108th  birth anniversary of the Late Eng. B.D.Rampala at the Wimalasurendra auditorium of its Headquarters on Thursday, 14th November, 2018 in the presence of a large audience comprised of Council members, Past Presidents, family members of Eng. BD Rampala, engineers of Sri Railways and general membership of the IESL.


    The memorial oration for this year was delivered by Eng. M.J.D. Fernando, General Manager, Sri Lanka Railways and was on the theme “Digitalization of Sri Lanka Railways by 2022”


    Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Pallewatta, President of IESL welcoming the audience said that the Late Eng B. D. Rampala became the first native Chief Mechanical Engineer,  in 1949, of the then ‘Ceylon Government Railways’ and went on to become the General Manager during the period 1955 - 1970, in what is now Sri Lanka Railways, and   through his initiatives revolutionized the country’s railways and the way we live in. The IESL has the honour of having had Eng. B.D. Rapala as its  President  in the year 1958..


    The commemoration was organized by the Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee for the 2018 / 2019 session of the IESL under the chairmanship of Eng. Asela Pathirathna who proposed the Vote-of- Thanks ending the event.

    The first ever Engineering Entrepreneurship BOOT-CAMP (EEB) for training and development of engineering entrepreneurs in the country was held  on 3rd, 4th and 5th  of November, 2018  at the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) Head Quarters, 120 /15, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7.


    As the premier professional organization for engineers in Sri Lanka with a membership of over 15,000 qualified engineers representing all the engineering disciplines, the  IESL plays a major role in the career development of Engineers.

    Conceived with the idea of supporting engineering entrepreneurs in the country, Engineering Entrepreneurship BOOT-CAMP (EEB) is intended to provide knowledge and skills for Engineering Entrepreneurship. It will create leaders for tomorrow’s high-tech ventures.


    The 3-day training and development programme  with residential facilities, food and beverages gave far and wide coverage for engineering entrepreneur startups from all over the country. The  EEB programme was comprehensively designed as a boot-camp where teams will get mentoring by experts; develop the entrepreneurial skills and strategies to develop sustainable business models. The knowledge sharing environment within teams created the ecosystem for entrepreneurial activities. Thus, EEB  facilitated the teams to work continuously towards development of the business plans to obtain funds or loans from Enterprise Sri Lanka programme/ investors.


    The Objective of the EEB programme is to provide comprehensive result driven Entrepreneurship curriculum for the Engineers to develop start-up ideas/proposals and goal driven training to pitch their start-up for the investors/ Public-Private-Partnerships and Enterprise Sri Lanka programme facilitated financial institutions.  The EEB is initiated from the Entrepreneurship forum of the Professional Affairs Committee of the IESL.

    The presentation of Technical Papers for 112th Annual Sessions was held at the IESL headquarters on 18th Thursday and 19th Friday, October, 2018 from 9.00 am both days. Response to this year’s Call for Papers saw an unprecedented number of abstracts and full papers being submitted, and the 95 papers that were finally accepted were published by the IESL as Technical Paper Transactions (Part B) of the institution and they were presented by the authors in parallel session. As in the previous year, participation in the presentation during the morning sessions of the two days were very strong at the Wimalasurendra auditorium.

    Technical Conference of Young Members for the  112th Annual Sessions of the IESL was held on Saturday, 20th  October, 2018 at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the institution. The conference provides all young members  of the institution a forum to present their technical papers and discuss engineering related topics with industry professionals. It is also aimed at promoting interaction among the young members of the profession providing a platform for broad basing their knowledge on specific subject matters. All  Associate Members below 35 years of age and all  Student Members are eligible to submit papers. The Panel of Judges for the conference consisted of Eng. B.S. Samarasiri – Chairman, Eng. MDC Perera, Eng.Ananda Sellahewa and and  Eng. Vajira Wijekoon.

     

    Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake, President of IESL for the 2017 / 2018 session presented mementoes to the Panel of Judges as tokens of appreciation. Presenters will receive certificate of presenting papers in due course.

    The grand finale to the Techno Sri Lanka 2018 exhibition, the ‘Techno Awards’ ceremony, was held on Wednesday, 02nd November 2018, from 7.00 PM onwards at the Galle Face Hotel. Representatives of stallholders and sponsors from among both private and public sector organizations, universities and other higher education institutions, IESL sectional committees and provincial chapters, Past Presidents and  IESL Council members were all in their best attire and spirit adding enthusiasm and colour to the glamorous event.

     

    Eng. Kamal Amaraweera, Director General, Road Development Authority of Sri Lanka  graced the occasion as Chief Guest while Maj. Gen K R P Rovel was the Guest of Honour.

     

    Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake, President of IESL for the Session 2017 / 2018 and Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Pallewatta, who has taken over the reins of presidency of the IESL for the new Sessions 2018 / 2019 and who is also the chairperson of the organizing committee of the Techno Sri Lanka 2018 combined forces  in doing the formalities

     

    It should be mentioned that, as in the previous years, the loyal following the Techno has built up through the years among the private and public sector stallholders, had all made their unfailing  and much welcome presence displaying and demonstrating their latest technological products, services and best practices at the exhibition. The participation of  the three security forces demonstrating their R & D efforts and achievements in the ‘Defense Pavilion’ was a special attraction to the visitors as it was in the previous year when they made their first entry to this arena.

    Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Palewatta, President of IESL for Session 2018 /19 took up duties of his presidency Monday, 5th November 2018 with religious  ceremonies to invoke blessings. Participating in the ceremonies were Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake - Immediate Past President, Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda - Past President, Eng. Neil Abeysekera - CEO/ES, Eng. Anura Panditharathna - DES and rest of staff at the Secretariat

    The annual Ray Wijewardene Memorial Lecture for the year 2018 was held at the Wimalasurendra Auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) on Monday, 29th October, 2018.  Mr. Kris Canekeratne – Cofounder Chairman / CEO of Vitusa Corporation headquartered in US delivered this year’s lecture on the topic ‘Creating a Culture of Innovation' which dealt with how to integrate the culture of innovation in to wider society making innovation relevant not only to business and education but also to life itself.


    The memorial lecture was organized jointly by the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka and Ray Wjewardene Charitable Trust, a  charitable organization established for the promotion of the vision and ideas of Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene . The lecture was preceded by the traditional lighting of the Oil Lamp and garlanding of the portrait of Late Dr Ray Wijewardene by the President of  the IESL,  Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Pallewatta. The Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene  Memorial Lecture was  first held in 2011 and this is the 8th lecture of its kind to held. Welcoming the capacity audience that attended  Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Pallewatta described the Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene as a person who excelled in many human endeavors.  Prof. Malik Ranasinghe, Chairman of the Ray Wijewardene Charitable Trust briefed the audience  about  the work that the Trust is involved in promoting the vision and ideas of Late Dr. Ray Wijewardene

    The IESL commemorated the 99th Birth anniversary of Dr. ANS Kulasinghe on Friday, 26th October , 2018. He is known not only for his contribution to engineering research and development but also for his lifetime commitment towards an indigenous approach to engineering application for national development.


    The memorial oration this year was delivered by Eng. U.S. Karunaratne, CEO of Central Engineering Services (Pvt.) Ltd. which is the construction arm of the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) The oration was on the theme ‘The Exceptional Engineer ’. The oration was preceded by lighting of the traditional Oil Lamp and garlanding of the portrait of the late engineer by IESL President, Eng. (Prof.) TM Pallewatta.

    The ceremonial inauguration of the  112th Annual Sessions of the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) was held on Tuesday, 16th October 2018, at the Main Hall, BMICH in the presence of a large gathering of participants.


    Hon. Karu Jayasuriya, Speaker of Parliament, Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest while Eng. M.R. Prelis, former CEO of DFCC Bank was Guest of Honour. The Keynote Speaker was Mr. Vajira Kulatilake, Director / Chief Executive Officer, NDB Capital Holdings Ltd.  Foreign delegates from FEISCA member organizations in India,    Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar also participated in the event.


    The highlight of the inauguration of annual sessions held in October of each year is the handing over of the mantle of presidency to the incoming president by the outgoing president after a reign of I year as president from October of the previous year.


    Eng. (Prof.) T.M. Pallewatta was inducted this year as President of IESL for 2018 / 2019 sessions. In his inaugural presidential address at the event he laid out his plans for taking forward the institutions stated missions towards achieving its vision. (Link to Presidential Address)


    Eng. (Prof.) Mrs. Niranjanie Ratnayake, the outgoing President in her speech highlighted global impact of  human disregard for sustainable practices and the need to correct present trends and  also wished the incoming President and Council success in their endeavor towards reaching the goals of the new session 2018 / 2019. (Link to Outgoing Presidents Address)



    The Guest of Honour, Eng. M.R. Prelis,  in his address highlighted the plight of our country’s engineers in the current scenario of professional competitiveness and the contrast it has with other countries where engineers are given pride of place in countries’ development process..


    The keynote speaker, Mr. Vajira Kulatilake, in his speech described in depth the structural reforms needed in the face of all current infrastructure being done by the government with no real investments coming from abroad. He pointed out the huge budget deficits and the practice of living  beyond the means by borrowing that has come to be the mainstay of country’s governance. He pointed out that the only viable solution on the table is the policy of Private Public Partnership.


    The event also saw certificates being presented to those admitted to the status of Honorary Life Fellows, Fellows and International Professional Engineers.


     Awards and certificates were also given to winners of special and memorial awards.


    School children who are winners of the IESL Junior Inventor of the Year 2018 competition were also awarded at the event


    The Vote of Thanks was proposed by Eng. (Prof.) S.B. Abayakoon, the President Elect for 2018 / 2019 sessions.
